I agree WordPress is an awesome website prototyping tool since it’s easy to work with and allows you to get your website up and running very quickly.
WordPress is also extremely capable as a full fledged content management system (CMS) for small to medium sized companies. Examples abound but take a look at the WordPress CMS showcase for tons of company website examples:

The principle advantage of starting with a WordPress theme that’s already customized (often called Premium or Pro WordPress themes) is that you don’t have to do much additional customization to end up with a really amazing design.
If you are doing a D-I-Y project these themes make it possible for non-technical people to offer website features and design elements that they would normally have to hire a programmer or designer to do. For us as web developers and marketers we can make our client websites faster and our client’s pay much less on their final design costs, leaving more money for other online marketing to drive sales leads. Try WooThemes, StudioPress and Press75 for some good ones.
